At the risk of going all anthropologist on you, I came across some intriguing stories about how people use NewNet tech. This piece summarizes some interviews Microsoft Researcher and Harvard Beckman Fellow danah boyd did with teen girls on their Facebook usage. While Mark Zuckerberg may talk about giving users control, these girls really do it. They manage Facebook communications by “whitewalling” – essentially wiping clean and forbidding posting on their Facebook pages unless they’re there and actually monitoring them. And they say why they’d actually want to do such a thing. It’s thought-provoking. Then there is this summary of a Twitter user survey that describes Twitter demo- and psychographics, but doesn’t tell us much about how they compare to the norm.
